Review:
Do you like complicated yet entertaining books? Well you have just found one in Desires Unleashed. No rehashed, boring Vamp/Shifter/Human stories involved, no sir! This is much more exciting and well, mind-boggling. So clear your head, get comfy and prepare to try and keep it all straight!;)
The Good: A book is always good when there are hot and steamy Vamps involved as far as I am concerned and with Darien and Xavier, that was totally the case (love the name Xavier). There were a lot of nice, strong characters but each one was fleshed out nicely and there was a lot of variety in personalities and character traits. While the book was a bit of a slow starter for me, once it got going, it was Katy Bar the Door and Get Out of the Way! Wow! So much information!
The Bad: I had never read any of DN Simmons books before this. Perhaps all of her books are this unique and complex. Unfortunately, it was a little too unique and complex for me...I had a hard time following who was who, what was what and who did what to whom. Maybe I am not quite ready for this much innovation. ;)
The Snuggly: If you are like me, you read that a book has vamps and shifters and your think there will be lots of yummy sex. Desires Unleashed is not an erotic romance, so if that's what you were looking for,
hoping to find that hot sex, you will likely be disappointed. There is sex in the book but it is just a way to progress the story and it is not strictly straight sex. More like it is not a heterosexual, or bisexual, or gay paranormal romance, it's all of them and also a mix of them. Yep. Gotta read it to see if you can keep all of that straight. Probably not something for the under 18 set, in my opinion.;)
The Rest: The author makes some very good points in this book and leaves you with a lot of food for thought. Are Race and Sexual Orientation really an issue? Why? And while it certainly is a Paranormal book, it takes place in our modern day society, pushing the boundaries of thought even more. So who should read Desires Unleashed? I'd say anyone over 18 who likes Paranormal, can handle a complex storyline and is not easily offended. It really was a good story and I would be willing to read some of the other books in her series to see how this plays out. A solid 4/5 Stars, 4/5 Flames!
